Frame Selection: The frame should be chosen based on the color and texture of the mats, and should ideally match the color of the third mat if three are used. The frame can also relate to a color found in the picture. If the owner has a color theme and frame theme, that will guide the frame selection. However, if the owner is looking for an eclectic look, careful examination of many frame samples is required. In summary, the selection of mats and frames for artwork is a process that involves considering the aesthetic of the artwork, the personal taste of the owner, and the overall decorative theme of the space where the artwork will be displayed.

When selecting mats for framing watercolor paintings, prints on paper, and pastel works of art, consider the following:
By considering these factors, you can select mats that enhance the artwork and complement its overall presentation.
A fillet here in America is pronounced Fil-it. In France they would pronounce it fee-lay.
Whichever way you choose they are both correct. The fillet is a piece of wood usually quite narrow and is found inside of the frame, or inside the liner, or inside a mat. The fillet greatly enhances the transition from one item to the next. Many fillets are either silver or gold, however they can be natural wood finish or a highlighted color. Fillets are made out of wood therefore underneath the fillet the framer must add a layer to separate the wood from the artwork. The layer protects the artwork from the wood. Wood is high in acid and will harm the artwork.
Here at Waggoner Art and Frame we have many types of fillets to choose from. Many are silver or gold some are natural wood and others have a great finish that will enhance the finished framed work. The use of a fillet is completely optional you do not have to include a fillet in the finished work. When you add a fillet to a framing project it increases the cost of material and labor.
Choosing the appropriate glass type for your artwork is a critical decision that can significantly impact the presentation and preservation of your pieces. The industry refers to the standard grade of glass, also known as 'green class', as a regular grade. This grade, however, lacks both UV resistance and optical coating, which can lead to issues with reflective light.
To mitigate this, there is the option of AR anti-reflective glass. This type of glass is coated with an optical layer that reflects approximately 1% of the light it receives. Another alternative is the Conservation Reflective glass. This glass type scatters up to 8% of the light, thereby reducing reflections and enhancing the visibility of the artwork.
The highest level of glass quality is the Museum Grade glass. This grade features a scattered light coating and a non-glare Matt finish, which significantly reduces the reflected light and ultraviolet light. This results in a museum-grade quality of glass.
Each level of glass quality, from regular to AR, conservation, and finally, museum grade, comes with an increase in cost. We recommend purchasing samples of each grade in a standard size, such as an 8 x 10, to evaluate their performance and determine which level of glass is best suited for your artwork.
